Ever wondered what to do with the peel left over from a fresh orange juice? The team at Caracara Collective have. They had the unique idea to turn the biowaste into eco-friendly, sustainable products for the home.
This lampshade has been made in their studio in Helsinki from approximately 20 squeezed oranges, or in other words, is the bi-product of someone drinking about 2 litres of juice. The result is an earthy, mottled orange-brown design, without the environmental cost.
About 16 million tonnes of orange peel waste is generated every year, much of it ending up in landfill, creating methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. The team gather the squeezed oranges from their local market, dry them over a number of weeks and then then handmake the lamp with use of an organic binder.
It has a 1.5m black cable and ceiling rose and is delivered without a bulb. We recommend using an E14 LED because they are energy efficient, recyclable and generate no heat. We advise installation by a qualified electrician.
Dimensions 14cm diameter and 16cm tall. 1.5 metre cable.
Weight, approximately 650 grams.
